Every third Sunday a month, you can see a Danish movie for free at the “Verdenskulturcentret” on Nørrebro.
At the first screening in the club, this coming Sunday (March 23), “Italian for beginners” is on, and Jens from Work & Life Denmark will make a short presentation on social life in Copenhagen (and lead up to a general discussion on the theme afterwards).
Here’s the description from Verdenskulturcentret for this event:
The FilmKlub from the Verdenskulturcentret offers monthly screenings of Danish movies with English subtitles every third Sunday of the month. This event is for all new-Danes, expats, immigrants and all groups of people who are living in Denmark and are challenged by the language barrier. After each film there will be a debate where local volunteers will answer all quirky questions you always had but were afraid to ask about Danish culture, humor and the perception that Danes have of the world that surrounds. Put it on your calendar and join us every month. There will be free coffee, tea and cookies to helps us mingle, make new friends, and ‘hygge’ in Copenhagen.
Dear Filmklub aficionados:
Let us tempt you with our first delivery: Italiensk for begyndere (2000). This is Denmark’s fifth official “Dogme” film which gave international recognition to its laureate director: Lone Scherfig.
Italian for beginners, is a charming bitter-sweet comedy about 6 lonely single people who sign up for Italian classes at their local evening school.
IMDb has given a high score to this film, so we hope you will enjoy it as well.
Director: Lone Scherfig
Born in Copenhagen in 1959, this famous director won her first Silver Bear in 2001, at the Berlin International Film Festival with this film. Numerous additional awards from around the world came just after, including the FIPRESCI International Film Critics Award and the Ecumenical Prize. Since then, her world recognition gave her plenty of opportunities to write and direct films with international movie stars like: Patricia Clarkson or Anne Hathaway.
Cool fact:
Lone Scherfig is married to a psychologist.
See you next Sunday, March 23 rd , 2014, at Verdenskulturcentret, from 15:30 to 17:30.
After the film: free coffee, tea and cookies and a savory cultural debate!
